More than a quarter of a million 15-year-olds in England hardly ever leave their bedrooms except for school, according to a new report from the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ).
Polling of 1,554 15-year-olds found 37% said they rarely leave their room outside school. Nearly one in five now spends no evenings out with friends in a typical week, up from one in eight in 2002.
The think tank said screens have filled the gap left by closed youth centres and lost playgrounds. It also found nearly 100,000 more completely inactive 11 to 16-year-olds than in 2018-19.
Senior researcher Tabby Fitzgerald said England was raising a ‘bedroom generation’.
The CSJ is calling for a ‘Right to Sport’, guaranteeing every secondary pupil two hours of PE and two hours of extracurricular activity each week. It comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was ‘massive on school sport’.
