PM praises councils for resettling 1,000 Syrian refugees

More than 50 local authorities have helped resettle 1,000 Syrian refugees, meeting the government's target of re-housing 1,000 refugees by Christmas.

Prime minister David Cameron said the UK had delivered on its promise and is on track to resettle 20,000 Syrians over the next five years through the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement (VPR) Scheme.

Mr Cameron said: 'The charter flights that arrived yesterday at Stansted and Belfast mean that over a 1,000 have been settled and another flight is coming today.

'The Government has provided funding so that all these refugees get housing, healthcare, education and I want to thank all the local authorities and all those who have worked so hard.'

The UK has also granted asylum or other forms of protection to 1,868 Syrians in the year ending September 2015.
