Nine in 10 residents who responded to a consultation have backed Kensington and Chelsea Council's plans to challenge Government funding changes that could leave it more than £100m worse off over four years.
The council asked whether it should use the Sustainable Communities Act to press ministers to reconsider the Fair Funding review. The cut would equal more than 40% of its controllable budget.
Of 1,499 respondents, 90% strongly supported the proposal and a further 3% supported it. Most chose retaining a greater share of locally generated income, including business rates, stamp duty and income tax, as their top priority.
Council leader Cllr Elizabeth Campbell said she would not implement the scale of service cuts and tax rises required without exhausting every avenue to challenge the decision.
‘I have been clear from the outset that we must continue to fight for a fairer funding settlement for Kensington and Chelsea,’ she said.
