A cash boost of £79m is to be provided to support the delivery of up to 500,000 trees across local communities.
In an announcement yesterday, the Government confirmed that a total of £53m will be allocated towards rural tree planting in streets and parks, as well as near people’s workplaces and homes.
The remaining £26m is to be handed to Mayors and councils to assist nature recovery efforts in their areas and will be shared between 48 authorities.
Funds will be delivered between April 2027 and March 2030, with the aim of enhancing biodiversity and protecting communities from extreme weather, such as flooding and heatwaves.
As well as supporting the creation of healthier environments, the move will advance progress towards statutory tree planting and net zero targets.
The statement highlights that strategies will be community-led, ensuring that councils can target climate risks specific to their region. Local Nature Recovery Strategies are carried out in collaboration with communities, farmers, businesses, planners, land managers and environmental groups.
