A major redevelopment of the Regent Retail Park in Salford has been approved by the city’s Planning and Transportation Regulatory Panel.
The ambitious plan will deliver around 3,300 homes alongside up to 10,000 square meters of commercial and community space and a brand-new 2½-acre public park.
Crucially, the development includes 660 social-rent homes, equating to about 20 % of the housing total. Local highways officers say the scheme will have less impact than the current site usage.
The controversial plan has been challenged. Six objectors spoke at the panel, including two Ordsall councillors not sitting on the panel and Rebecca Long-Bailey MP.
Cllr Mike McCusker, lead member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development at Salford City Council, said: ‘Salford City Council has long recognised the importance of regeneration in enhancing the city and improving opportunities for local people.
‘We hope this proposed development in Ordsall can bring further benefits, including a substantial contribution to Salford’s social housing supply.’
