Kirklees Council has paid tribute to Mirfield-born actor Sir Patrick Stewart, who has died aged 86.
Council leader Cllr Sarah Wood and the Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Karen Allison, said his career was a source of immense pride for Mirfield, Huddersfield and the whole borough. They said he never forgot his roots and remained a passionate ambassador for the area.
They also highlighted his years as Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield. Kirklees awarded him the Freedom of the Borough in 2024, recognising his achievements and his enduring connection to the area.
Describing him as ‘an extraordinary talent’ and someone the borough was privileged to call ‘one of our own’, the civic leaders said few people had taken Yorkshire to the world quite like him.
As a mark of respect, and in recognition of his status as a Freeman of the Borough, flags will be lowered to half-mast on the day of his funeral.
