Huntingdonshire District Council has emerged top of a list that ranks local and central government employers when it comes to gender equality.
The Equity Index 2022/23 uses official data on average salaries, bonuses, and pay at every level to provide insight into more than 10,000 companies and organisations.
Produced by Lead 5050, a cross-industry accreditation organisation which uses data to drive equality, the index shows that Huntingdonshire DC has a mean pay gap of just 0.75%.
The index also revealed that women and men make up extremely similar proportions within top, bottom, upper-middle and lower-middle pay bands.
Executive councillor for Corporate and Shared Services at Huntingdonshire DC, Cllr Martin Hassall, said: ‘It is fantastic to be recognised for our organisation’s gender equality, as a council we are committed to equality across the board. Scoring so highly on this new index is one of the things that makes us a unique employer with excellent career opportunities.’
Northumberland County Council was ranked second place on the index, and Ipswich Borough Council and Preston City Council were tied for third.
In fifth place was Cherwell District Council, followed by Hambleton District Council, Leicester City Council and Gedling Borough Council. Bolsover District Council and City of York Council shared the ninth place.
The index includes every organisation in the UK – whether public or private sector – that has more than 250 employees, as well as a number of smaller employers who have chosen to submit data on gender-based pay.
