Enfield Council has formally withdrawn from the Government's New Town programme following the election of Conservative leader Cllr Alessandro Georgiou.
In a letter to housing minister Matthew Pennycook, Cllr Georgiou confirmed the council will no longer support proposals linked to the programme, including planned development at Crews Hill, Vicarage Farm and other Green Belt sites.
The decision follows May's local elections, which returned 31 Conservative, 27 Labour and five Green councillors – ending the previous administration's support for the scheme.
Cllr Georgiou said: ‘We have been elected on a clear mandate to protect Enfield's Green Belt, and today we are honouring that commitment by formally withdrawing from the New Town process.’
The council says it remains committed to delivering new homes and jobs, but will pursue a brownfield-first approach focused on underused land and town centre regeneration.
In March 2026, the Government had confirmed Crews Hill and Chase Park among seven locations being considered for New Towns. A Government update is expected this summer.
