Driver of bin lorry crash resigns from job

The driver of a bin lorry which crashed in Glasgow killing six people, has resigned from his job ahead of a disciplinary hearing.

Harry Clarke hit shoppers in George Square after reportedly losing consciousness behind the wheel.

Although he is not facing a criminal prosecution, he had been due to attend investigation proceedings after it emerged he failed to disclose his medical history of fainting and dizziness when he applied to work for the city council.

Sheriff John Beckett QC is due to report his findings from the inquiry into the accident early next year.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: 'Harry Clarke has resigned with immediate effect and is no longer an employee of Glasgow City Council.'
