South Norfolk District Council has backed plans for an £8.1m regeneration scheme in Diss.
The proposals that were approved in a meeting last Wednesday include plans to build a new leisure and community centre, using the land of the John Grose car dealership after its demolition.
As part of the project, new fitness facilities, a multi-use community room, soft play and a café with mere views will be delivered.
To support the scheme, the council’s cabinet has agreed to provide funding of £7.1m, with a further £1m having been confirmed from the Greater Norwich Growth Board.
According to the council, the project is part of its broader goals to enhance Diss’ leisure facilities by creating more modern and inclusive community health spaces.
The plans have been greenlighted by Diss Town Council and are due to be considered by the planning committee in April.
Cllr Kim Carsok said: ‘This is a really exciting step forward for this ambitious project. We would like to thank Diss Town Councillors for their support as we continue to invest in the health and wellbeing of the residents in the town.’
Commenting on the responses from the public consultation, Cllr Carsok explained that ‘some suggestions were neither practical nor affordable’, but said ‘it was fantastic to see that the vast majority of residents who took part in the consultation were in favour of our plans’.
