Poor white school pupils in England have ‘particularly poor educational outcomes’, according to the Institute for Government (IfG).
The think tank found that council areas whose disadvantaged pupils recorded the worst academic performance were ‘disproportionately likely’ to have ‘above-average’ shares of pupils from the ‘high-impact’ group, the predominantly white British group of pupils whose disadvantage most affects their performance.
The IfG’s report said schools were ‘one of the few public service success stories in England over the last decade and a half’ but added that ‘progress was brought to a shuddering halt when Covid hit.’
