Devon County Council has announced proposals to create a new unitary authority as part of its reorganisation plans.
The single unitary authority will serve as a replacement for Devon CC and the further eight district councils in the area.
According to Cllr Paul Arnott, deputy leader of Devon CC, the decision has been shaped by the thorough work of officers and engagement with community members.
Cllr Arnott has argued the plans will increase local accountability and support the ‘smarter use of public money’, while boosting the local economy and workforce.
Council leader Cllr Julian Brazil has said the move will avoid ‘disastrous’ service disruption, particularly to essential services like children and adult’s social care.
Cllr Brazil said: ‘The Government is intent on forcing through changes which will cost many millions of pounds to implement and provides a great deal of uncertainty for residents and staff who provide critical services.
‘This option has emerged as the least worst’, he added.
