County councils in care funding warning

County councils have warned that reforms threaten to drive up demand for services, ahead of the latest parliamentary debate on the Care Bill.

Speaking before a provisional sitting in the House of Commons on Thursday, chairman of the County Councils Network (CCN) David Hodge said the £3.46bn Better Care Fund did not alone address the long-term funding pressures.

Cllr Hodge said: ‘These pressures are particularly felt by CCN member councils.

‘Local government continues to inch toward the cliff edge as demand-led pressures rise.

‘CCN members are feeling the pressure first as we have a higher proportion of over-60s, larger geographical areas to service and higher numbers of self-funders to bring into the system, but it’s a sector-wide issue.

‘The Care Bill and other reforms also threaten to drive up demands for services.’
