Councils have expressed deep concerns about Government plans to remove Afghan refugees from hotel accommodation amid a ‘chronic’ shortage of affordable housing.
Defence minister Johnny Mercer announced last month that up to 9,000 Afghan evacuees currently living in hotels will shortly be served notice to vacate sites, with the intention to move families into suitable housing.
The announcement follows concerns that the Government shells out £6m a day to place asylum seekers in bridging hotels, including £1m spent on Afghans evacuated under a national resettlement scheme.
From the end of April, Afghan families will be given three months to accept a single offer of alternative housing or they must present to a council as homeless.
