Councils' cash stash soars as millions go untouched

Local authorities in England paid more money into their reserves last year than they took out, Government figures have revealed.

According to data for 2025-26, councils made a net contribution of £660m into revenue reserves, with most of the money put aside for future revenue and capital spending or for ‘specific risks'.
