Blaby District Council has issued a prosecution warning to ‘menace drivers’ who have been dangerously undertaking the local authority’s bin crews.
In a statement last week, the council revealed that pedestrians are being put at risk by ‘impatient’ motorists that mount the kerb to pass refuse vehicles.
According to the council, this type of incident has taken place on at least six occasions in recent months.
To help tackle the issue, the local authority has confirmed that any available dashcam footage or other video evidence will be handed to Leicestershire Police to support enforcement action.
The offence of driving on a footpath could result in a minimum fine of £50, or see motorists face court action, as well as possible fines of up to £1,000 and penalty points.
Cllr Nigel Grundy, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Assets, said that there is no problem with motorists passing council lorries safely, but emphasised that drivers have recently ‘been going to extraordinary and dangerous lengths’ to do so.
He added: ‘There has been a notable increase in motorists literally mounting the pavement on the inside of the lorries to try and get round them more quickly. Not only is this reckless it is downright dangerous – putting any pedestrian at risk.
‘We urge drivers not to attempt such hazardous manoeuvres and remind them we do have video cameras on our lorries so any vehicles captured mounting the pavement could face police action.’
