City of Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety investigation after a man was killed by a Siberian tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
As the park's licensing authority, the council said it was acting in line with its statutory duties and working with police and health agencies to establish the circumstances.
Witnesses said the unnamed visitor entered the tiger enclosure after jumping from a bridge, despite a woman's attempt to stop him. The tiger subsequently attacked him, resulting in serious injury.
Emergency services attended shortly after 1.35pm, but he died at the scene.
Dan Swaine, Executive Director of Place, said the council's thoughts were with everyone involved, including the man's family, witnesses, park staff and emergency services.
‘At this time, we won’t be commenting further on the individual or the investigation and we ask that the privacy of those involved is respected at this difficult time,’ he added.
The park temporarily closed while affected staff received specialist support. Officials confirmed the tiger, named Altai, will not be euthanised.
