Council chiefs sceptical over retention of business rates

Less than half of council chief executives (48%) believe business rate income will replace grant funding by 2020, according to a new survey.

The survey, conducted by The MJ and Penna, also found there was confusion when it came to how the localisation of business rates would impact on their local authorities, with 47% of chiefs not knowing if they will be better or worse off.

Managing director of Penna Recruitment Solutions, Julie Towers, said: ‘Our survey shows there is a level of uncertainty across local government and this is just one issue where more clarity is needed.’
