Cornwall Council could become the first county to benefit from new devolution powers announced in the Summer Budget, after councillors approved the ‘Case for Cornwall’ proposals.
Members of the council have backed proposals to make an agreement with the Government to secure more powers over transport, housing and economic growth.
‘Cornwall has the opportunity to develop a devolution deal which will provide a blueprint for other areas,’ said council leader John Pollard.
‘If agreed these proposals will allow the people of Cornwall to benefit from an integrated health and social care system, significant economic growth, more affordable homes, greater access to employment and training opportunities, together with a much improved public transport network.’
The council is calling for greater control over bus services, health and social care services, the development of electrical grid, the planning system and local flood defences.
It also wants to retain a share of Stamp Duty and income from Right to Buy sales to build more affordable housing, and a share of fuel duty to maintain roads.
