Nearly 70% of people have reported that the elimination of council tax would improve their living standards.
According to a poll from the Fairer Share campaign group, proposals to replace council tax with a new Proportional Property Tax have been supported by 48% of respondents, with 67% revealing that the eradication of council tax would ‘positively affect their cost of living’.
The data also found that the removal of council tax would prove more worthwhile than ending stamp duty or reducing national insurance, based on responses from 1000 participants.
More than half of the respondents (55%) also backed a revaluation of the system to align council tax with property values today.
Andrew Dixon, founder and Chair of Fairer Share, said: ‘Fairer Share’s poll shows clear support for not only scrapping stamp duty, but also going further and faster at the Budget – replacing council tax too.
‘Stamp duty is punitive and distortionary, while council tax is regressive and outdated. Our previous polling found more support than opposition in every constituency. Momentum is growing to replace both with a simplified nationwide Proportional Property Tax.’
