Brighton and Hove launches 20mph limits

A 20mph speed limit has been introduced to a number of central roads in Brighton and Hove under the first phase of wider implementation.

From today, most residential and shopping streets in the city centre will have a speed limit of 20mph, while major roads and routes out of Brighton and Hove will continue to hold 30mph limits.

Consultation on future phases will take place over the next three years, with the council currently proposing introduction of the lower speed limit throughout the city.

Lower limits will improve the street environment and safety for road users while aiding the flow of traffic in the city, the local authority expects.

Brighton and Hove City Council also anticipate these benefits will encourage cycling and walking, improving local health and air quality.

Chair of Brighton and Hove City Council’s transport committee, Cllr Ian Davey, said: ‘Our aim is to make the streets safer and more pleasant to use for everyone - residents, visitors and all roads users including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

‘We want to keep the city moving and research and feedback from other areas where 20mph limits have been introduced has shown there has not been a negative impact. However, we will monitor the impact of the limits closely and keep them under review.’
