Cllr Garry Bridges has been elected leader of Manchester City Council's Labour group, filling the vacancy left by Bev Craig after her election as Greater Manchester mayor.
He is due to be formally confirmed as council leader tomorrow.
Group secretary Cllr Pat Karney praised the choice, telling Manchester Evening News that Bridges ‘will be a worthy successor to the great Labour leaders we have had.’
Karney added that the contest had been amicable: ‘The leadership contest was friendly and orderly. We try to minimise town-hall drama in Manchester and concentrate on services for Mancunians.’
