Revised outline planning permission has been granted for a scheme to build up to 20,000 houses at Barking Riverside.
The project will be delivered through a partnership between housing provider L&Q and the Mayor of London and has been granted approval by Barking and Dagenham Council’s planning committee.
More than 4,000 of the homes in the Barking Riverside Limited (BRL) development will be affordable. The partnership has also committed to building green spaces, schools, a health facility, community centres, and walking and cycling infrastructure on the 443-acre site.
Backed by over £170m from Homes England, the project has seen a total of over 3,000 homes completed so far, with the potential for the finished project to house as many as 50,000 residents.
Tom Copley, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development, said that the scheme is ‘a fantastic example of a major brownfield regeneration, supported by City Hall and partners, which is delivering for the local community in this vibrant part of East London’.
Fiona Fletcher-Smith, Group Chief Executive at L&Q, added: ‘Delivering well-designed affordable homes and community infrastructure at scale at Barking Riverside represents our long-term plans to tackle the housing crisis in London. We believe it could be a blueprint for brownfield development across the country’.
