Concerns over conditions inside some asylum accommodation intensified last week, after the death of an asylum seeker onboard the controversial Bibby Stockholm barge.
As the suspected suicide on the Bibby Stockholm was confirmed on 12 December, the local government sector continued to challenge conditions inside some asylum contingency hotels run by the Home Office.
Steve Smith, chief executive of the Care 4 Calais charity revealed he had also raised repeated concerns about conditions on the Bibby Stockholm and former military barracks housing asylum seekers.
‘We have witnessed a serious deterioration of people’s mental health. We have regularly been reporting suicidal intentions amongst residents and no action is taken,’ Mr Smith warned.
