Plans to create Ashford Town Council have been put on hold, Ashford Borough Council has confirmed.
The borough council decided in July 2026 to establish a town council following a Community Governance Review. That decision was based on local government reorganisation (LGR) in Kent taking place in 2028, when the borough council would be replaced by a larger unitary authority.
Ministers have since asked councils to pause work that depends on a specific LGR decision, including activity based on the proposed four-unitary model for Kent and Medway. In light of this, Full Council voted on 15 October to pause implementation.
As a result, the town council will no longer be established on 1 April 2027 as planned, and elections due on 6 May 2027 will not go ahead on that date.
