A planned bin strike in Wrexham has been suspended after last-minute talks between Unite and Wrexham County Borough Council.
More than 100 Unite members in the council’s street scene team – including refuse workers, parks and highways staff – had been due to walk out on Saturday 30 August and every Saturday until mid-November.
The dispute centred on changes to bank holiday working. The council had moved collections from bank holiday Mondays to the following Saturdays, requiring staff to work those days under threat of disciplinary action. Unite said the change would cut half a day’s pay for workers on each bank holiday and remove the option of voluntary overtime.
Following fresh negotiations, both sides agreed to launch a new consultation on bank holiday working arrangements. This Saturday’s shift will now be voluntary while talks continue.
