Wrekin Products, manufacturer of intelligent products for civil engineering, has come to the rescue of contractors with the launch of the ProtectaWeb™ Tree Root Protection System, a simple, no-dig solution to the thorny issue of constructing developments without damaging existing trees.
With available land at a premium, there is a growing need to construct access roads, cycle tracks and footpaths in close proximity to established trees. However, without adequate protection, ground compaction can inflict significant stress and ultimately send the tree into decline.
ProtectaWeb™ helps developers and local authorities to meet their legislative requirements to preserve tree growth – especially crucial where Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) are in effect. If developers or contractors are found to have cut down or caused damage to trees subject to TPOs they may be prosecuted up to the value of £20,000 per tree.
Wrekin Products’ Divisional Director of Geosynthetics, Roy Partington – an experienced designer of solutions for tree root protection – explains the rationale behind the ProtectaWeb™ solution:
“ProtectaWeb™ will be of huge interest not only to contractors but to the arboricultural consultants and tree officers responsible for ensuring long-term tree health. We’ll be reaching out to them throughout 2016 and beyond in order to ensure that ProtectaWeb™ becomes the standard specification product for tree root protection.”
The ProtectaWeb™ 3D cellular confinement system includes high-quality Root-Tex 30™ and Root-Tex 10™ geotextiles. It provides a stable, high-strength platform for construction that significantly reduces the imposed loads on the soil and tree roots beneath. The composition of ProtectaWeb™ also prevents intermixing of the granular fill between the cells and the soil beneath.
In addition to a high level of permeability so as not to restrict the supply of water to the roots, ProtectaWeb™ has been developed to remove four times more oils, heavy metals and contaminants than standard geotextiles.
