City of Wolverhampton Council is testing new sensor technology in grit bins as part of ongoing winter work to keep residents safe.
The sensors, currently installed at selected locations, alert council crews when rock salt levels are low and bins need refilling.
The trial aims to improve efficiency by helping the council identify usage patterns and plan refilling routes more effectively, potentially saving time and resources.
More than 260 grit bins across the city were replenished in the past week in preparation for colder weather and remain available for public use.
Cllr Qaiser Azeem, cabinet member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: ‘We are in the early stages of testing this technology, but the sensors will be a useful tool in helping us monitor the use of grit bins in the city.
‘By using the data provided by the sensors, we will be able to focus resources where they are most needed, helping to ensure the safety of residents.’
