West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker has unveiled plans to create tens of thousands of new jobs and homes, which he hopes will ‘turbocharge’ the region’s economy over the next decade.
The West Midlands Growth Plan has been launched by Parker alongside local authorities in the region and includes plans to create 100,000 ‘good jobs in fast-growing industries’, improving public transport and building 120,000 new homes.
Also included are measures to cut poverty and increase the region’s progress towards net zero.
‘We’re the biggest region outside London, with world-class universities, global brands and incredible talent. When the West Midlands thrives, the whole country benefits,’ said Parker.
Among local authority figures backing the plan is Birmingham City Council leader Cllr John Cotton.
Cllr Cotton said: ‘Increasingly, businesses want to invest here, and families want to live [and] work here, and this growth plan will bring more jobs and skills, better transport and much-needed housing, as well as support our vital net zero ambitions.’
The plan aims to build on investment already secured since Labour’s Parker was elected in May last year, including £2.4bn for transport improvements.
