Watch: Mayor feels flushed after leaving microphone on during toilet trip

A Texan council meeting has descended into hysterics after its mayor left his microphone switched on while taking a toilet break.

Council members in Georgetown were left tittering after mayor Dale Ross broadcast his visit to the little boys’ room over town hall speakers.

Rachael Jonrowe attempted to continue her emotional address on antibiotic resistance but collapsed into fits of giggling when Ross’ flush echoed round the council chamber.

Ross laughed off the error and said it proved his commitment to transparency, which the incident ‘showed I believed in’ - the Austin Statesman reports.

‘I think the average person can relate to this, that even the mayor - when nature calls - has to go,’ he said.

Commenting on the international popularity of the video, Ross added: ‘This mayor is not just a local mayor, he’s an international mayor. He goes to China and then he has a video go viral throughout the world.’

Why age alone shouldn’t define local government leadership

Age should never define leadership in local government, says Graeme McDonald, Managing Director of Solace. Instead, councils should invest in inclusive, skills-based development for officers and councillors to deliver effective public services.
