Unite members working for councils have rejected a pay offer from local government employers and the union will now ballot on strike action.
While the union would not reveal how many members participated in the vote it revealed that 75% had rejected the offer on the table and 90% of those opposing the deal supported a move to strikes.
A strike ballot by the union is now expected to start before the end of this month, with industrial action at English, Welsh and Northern Irish councils potentially beginning before the school summer holidays.
Unite national officer Clare Keogh said: ‘Council leaders need to wake up and be aware they are facing a summer of strikes unless local government employers return to the negotiating table and propose a vastly improved pay offer.
