Transport for London (TfL) has announced a new five-year pan-city roadworks strategy designed to improve how the capital’s streets function, with a focus on safer, more efficient and sustainable travel across London.
The plan seeks to modernise traffic management and support better journeys for road users, particularly those using buses, which remain a key mode of accessible transport in the capital.
Under its 2030 vision, TfL aims to optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion through technology upgrades, including enhancements to its FUSION traffic control system and broader use of AI-powered monitoring tools.
The strategy also involves expanding the lane rental scheme from major routes to borough roads, encouraging utility companies to undertake works at less disruptive times.
Other commitments in the plan include accelerating bus priority measures, reviewing signal timings across entire bus routes and working closely with London boroughs on road safety and infrastructure improvements.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: ‘This bold new approach to managing the capital’s streets will ensure they work for everyone: harnessing cutting-edge technology and infrastructure to reduce congestion, keep Londoners safe, and speed up journey times on London’s bus network.’
