Teachers last year received over £15m in compensation for successful claims, including one which involved a six-figure payout for a teacher who was hit by a toaster.
Most of the claims relate to unfair dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, health and safety and personal injury.
The figures have been released by the NASUWT teachers’ union ahead of their annual conference in Birmingham.
One teacher received a six-figure payment in damages after a pupil threw a toaster and a chair at them, while another contracted leptospirosis from an infestation of rats at their school.
Matt Wrack, NASUWT General Secretary, said: ‘If all employers took seriously their duty of care and legal responsibilities to their employees we would not be forced to pursue legal remedies to get redress for members.’
