Sport England has unveiled 27 additional ‘Place Partnerships,’ expanding its drive to tackle inactivity across England, especially in areas hit hardest by poverty, social need and poor health.
The newly added areas – spanning rural and urban communities from Cornwall to County Durham, and East Suffolk to London boroughs – all rank in the top 20% nationally for inactivity and social deprivation.
Backed by a £250m pot of National Lottery and Government funding, the move aims to bring sport and everyday activity within reach for all, helping shrink health and inequality gaps.
Officials say the goal is to end a ‘postcode lottery’ where your postcode determines your access to movement, opportunity and wellbeing. Sport England chief executive Simon Hayes commented: ‘Making exercise a normal part of life for everyone, all over the country, drives major social and economic value; active lifestyles save the health system £8 billion a year.
‘If everybody can take part in sport and exercise – regardless of background, bank balance or postcode – we will all be healthier, wealthier and happier.’
