Investment in the maintenance of school buildings is set to rise to almost £3bn per year as part of the Government’s 10-year infrastructure strategy.
The strategy, which is backed by at least £725bn, aims to deal with the maintenance backlog affecting schools, hospitals, courts and other buildings.
‘Crumbling public buildings are a sign of the decay that has seeped into our everyday lives because of a total failure to plan and invest,’ said Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
She added: ‘We’re not just fixing buildings – we’re enhancing public services, improving lives and creating the conditions for sustainable economic growth in communities throughout the UK.’
Around £9bn will be allocated in 2025-26 to address the maintenance needs of health, education and justice estates, rising to over £10bn per year by 2034-35.
The £725bn funding pot also includes £1bn for roads maintenance announced earlier in the week.
