Up to 300 jobs and £25m from public services are to be cut by Salford Council next year.
The council has said government spending cuts will see some services scrapped altogether, with more than £10m cut from children’s and adult’s services.
The 288 job cuts will be lost through voluntary redundancy and early retirement to avoid compulsory redundancies.
City mayor, Ian Stewart, said the government’s austerity programme will hit the most vulnerable the hardest. He said: ‘These Government-forced cuts are horrific and will cause real hurt to real people in Salford.‘After three years of austerity, we are being forced to cut into the bone in order to set a legal budget.
‘This is not about ‘efficiencies’ or ‘rationalisations’ anymore. These cuts will cause untold damage to the services we provide.
‘Our two biggest spending departments - children's services and adult care - will inevitably and regrettably bear the brunt. We cannot make the cuts demanded by the Government, without vital services to the young and old suffering some pain.’
He added the face of local government in Salford will be ‘changed forever’ due to the spending cuts.
