Great Yarmouth Borough Council has told those living in clifftop properties that their homes are at ‘serious risk’ of collapse from Storm Goretti.
Fourteen homeowners in Hemsby, Norfolk, have been notified that properties are at ‘serious risk’ of collapse following assessments by coastal experts.
‘While these decisions are extremely difficult, doing nothing is not an option’, the council has explained.
In a statement on X, the council has warned that over 10 metres of land has been lost due to coastal erosion during recent bad weather, with the storm predicted to cause further damage over the weekend.
The local authority highlighted that its ‘focus is on supporting residents through what we recognise is a deeply upsetting and traumatic situation’ and confirmed that temporary accommodation and housing assistance is being provided for those affected.
The council said: ‘As the coastal management authority, we are in direct contact with the owners of 14 properties on the Marrams and Fakes Road to explain the situation, outline the options available and ensure safety remains the top priority.’
It added: ‘For everyone’s safety, we urge people to stay well clear of the dune face, follow any signage in place and be aware that some areas of the beach may be closed.’
