Ministers have backed a byelaw application by Enfield LBC to prohibit anti-social spitting across the borough.
Having submitted an application to the Department for Communities and Local Government earlier this year, Enfield will now be able to enforce a byelaw which makes it an offence to spit in the street ‘without reasonable excuse’.
Given cross party support for the byelaw at the London borough, secretary of State for local government, Eric Pickles, championed the move, damning spitting as ‘deeply anti-social’.
In a letter to Enfield, ministers praised reassurances given by the London borough about the robustness of the proposed byelaw and the level of enforcement likely to take place.
Pickles said: ‘Spitting is a deeply anti-social and unpleasant practice. Spitting on Britain’s streets is not socially acceptable.
‘In light of the cross party support and backing of ruling and opposition groups, we are giving the go-ahead to new powers for Enfield council to tackle these localised problems.’
