A council has been ordered to grant £130,000 to residents following noise complaints about games in a children’s park.
Residents reportedly took legal action against Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council in 2021 due to disruptions caused by loud football games in the village memorial park.
Complainants were said to have argued that the park’s games area did not comply with planning guidance due to its close proximity to houses.
The council began the demolition of the games area last month, while the hearing on Thursday last week purportedly saw the local authority fined £100 and instructed to pay £130,000 to two residents, according to the Daily Mail.
Members of the community have since hit back against the removal of the site, arguing that the move will have negative implications for local children.
In September, the council shared a statement revealing that the demolition was a ‘difficult decision’, and that the local authority ‘share[s] in the disappointment felt by many in the community’.
The statement confirmed that the local authority is ‘exploring alternative temporary spaces that can be made available for community use while longer-term plans are developed’.
The council has been contacted for comment.
