The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has written to the Government after Leicester City Council refused to fully accept recommendations following a complaint from a domestic abuse survivor.
The complaint, upheld in October 2024, found the council failed to provide suitable accommodation for a woman and her children, leaving them in temporary bed and breakfast housing for 13 weeks longer than legally allowed.
While the council agreed to make some service improvements, it has declined to pay the financial remedy recommended by the Ombudsman, including £1,300 for distress caused and ongoing monthly payments until suitable housing is provided.
Ombudsman Amerdeep Somal said the council’s refusal was ‘incredibly rare’ and urged senior councillors to reconsider the recommendations.
The council has been contacted for comment.
