Nigel Farage has announced he is stepping down as the leader of Ukip because he feels he has ‘done [his] bit’ by getting Britain out of the European Union.
The announcement was made at a press conference in Westminster where he explained: ‘I couldn’t possibly achieve more than we managed to get in that referendum, so I feel it’s right that I should now stand aside as leader of Ukip.’
This is the third time the prominent Eurosceptic MP has resigned his position at the head of the UK Independence Party.
The 52-year-old was originally leader from 2006 to 2009 and came back to the job after the 2010 election.
He resigned again after the 2015 election, but returned a few days later to help lead the campaign to leave the EU.
Mr Farage said the campaigning had ‘come at a cost to me and perhaps to those around me.’
‘During the referendum campaign I said, “I want my country back” and what I’m saying today is, “I want my life back”,’ he added.
