The Oxford-Cambridge corridor is to benefit from the addition of a new national forest.
As part of a £1bn tree planting initiative, the Government has revealed that two new national forests will be delivered across the UK, with the aim of achieving ‘national renewal for communities’.
In addition to the Western Forest, the announcement today confirmed that a second forest will be situated between Oxford and Cambridge, with the location of the third to be decided by competition next year.
According to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, the move will boost the economy and support communities by improving connections to nature.
The initiative could also enhance local workforces, with the potential for 14,000 roles to be generated through the fulfilment of the Government’s tree planting goals.
Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, said: ‘Our woodlands are vital for regulating our climate, supporting wildlife and increasing access to nature for us all.’
She added: ‘Our ambitious tree planting programme will help unlock growth, restore nature and create green jobs for the future – all part of the Plan for Change.’
