Over four million parking tickets were distributed between April and June this year, research reveals.
The figures reportedly demonstrate a 24% increase in the number of tickets handed out by private parking firms, according to the RAC Foundation and PA news agency’s analysis of Government data.
Drivers are said to be receiving an average of 48,000 tickets each day, with the total number of tickets issued between April and June having increased significantly compared to the 3.5 million distributed in the second quarter of last year.
Motorists are also receiving fines of up to £100 per person, according to Sky News, with objections being made about charges issued by private parking firms.
The analysis follows delays to the Government’s consultation on a new code of practice for the industry.
Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, reportedly said private parking management is ‘a one-way street to big profits for firms in the sector, driven in large part by the millions and millions of tickets issued annually’.
A Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson told Sky News: ‘Our private parking code of practice will stamp out unfair charges and drive up standards in the industry - the consultation on this closes next week and we'll work quickly to bring in these changes.’
