An amendment to the levelling up Bill for mandatory housebuilding targets has been rejected by the House of Lords.
Former Conservative housing minister Lord Young tabled the controversial amendment, which would have required local plans to meet or exceed Government targets for new homes.
He argued: ‘You cannot rely on the goodwill of local government to provide the homes that the country needs.’
The amendment was met with a divided reception, with Lib Dem local government spokesperson Baroness Pinnock arguing ‘top-down targets do not build homes’.
