London boroughs have identified sites for more than 50,000 new council homes in the capital, if enough funding is available, according to new analysis.
London Councils said the pipeline, covering the next 10 years, would increase the capital's council housing stock of around 390,000 homes by almost 15%.
The figure comes from a survey of boroughs' submissions to the London Social and Affordable Homes Programme.
Delivering the pipeline would need £12.3bn in grant funding, while the programme is set to receive £11.7bn from 2026 to 2036 and is also designed to fund housing associations and private developers.
Ahead of the Autumn Budget, London Councils is calling for further grant funding, reform of Housing Revenue Account rules, including access to low-interest loans, and more funding for acquisitions.
Cllr Anthony Okereke, the group's executive member for housing and homelessness, said: ‘Boroughs want to build more.’
He added: ‘We have the expertise, we have the vision, we have the determination – we now need the investment to make it happen.’
