The Local Government Associations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to protecting democratic participation and civility in public life.
The LGA, NILGA, COSLA and WLGA highlighted growing concern over threats, abuse and intimidation directed at councillors and officers, particularly online, which are deterring people from standing for election and forcing some from public service altogether.
They stressed that healthy democracy relies on robust debate, but that harassment, threats and misinformation have no place in civic life.
Councillors and elected representatives are urged to model respectful behaviour, promoting safe, inclusive and constructive engagement with the public.
The associations called on the UK Government, devolved administrations, and the police to collaborate with councils to tackle abuse, counter disinformation, and ensure that elected officials and officers can serve their communities with confidence, dignity and security.
