Fly-tippers could have penalty points added to their driving licences — and ultimately lose them altogether — under new measures being considered by the Government as part of a crackdown on waste crime.
The proposal forms part of a forthcoming Waste Crime Action Plan, which will set out tough action on waste criminals, from fly-tipping through to large illegal waste sites.
With most fly tips being around the size of a small van load, the Government argues that disqualifying offenders from driving would make it harder for them to continue dumping illegally.
New guidance has also been published giving councils clear instructions on identifying, seizing and disposing of vehicles used in fly-tipping.
Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds said: ‘Litter louts who repeatedly break the law will see points added to their licence and risk losing it for good if they continue to offend.’
‘We are empowering local authorities to deal with fly-tipping, like seizing and crushing vehicles, and are urging them to make use of the whole range of measures available to them.’
