A legal case has been filed against Leicester City Council following a dispute about landlord fees.
Landlords from letting agent Martin & Co have sought help from JMP Solicitors after being charged fees they believe are unreasonably high.
Sixty landlords are currently involved in the legal dispute, and a further 40 are expected to participate by the end of June.
Whilst the landlords claim to have been charged £1,290 per property, the solicitors have argued that the fees are inconsistent with regional rental prices, which average at £989 per month.
Jason Smart from JMP Solicitors told The Telegraph: ‘We don't accept that the charges being rendered are fair and reasonable. They are penal, sporadic and inconsistent.’
The case follows recent changes made to the Housing Act 2004, which now enables councils to alter selective licensing schemes that affect landlords without the Secretary of State’s permission.
