The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has urged the local authorities surrounding the capital to join him in calling on the Government to fund a scrappage scheme for non-ULEZ compliant cars covering the southeast of England.
Mr Khan last week announced that the ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) scrappage scheme will be expanded, with grants of £2,000 being made available to all Londoners who own a non ULEZ-compliant car or motorbike.
However, there is no such scheme in place for residents living in the Home Counties who regularly drive into London, prompting calls from the leaders of Hertfordshire and Kent county councils – among others – for the scrappage scheme to be extended beyond the capital.
Mr Khan today urged these local authorities to join him in calling for on the Government to ‘give the south-east the same money other cities and regions have got for scrappage schemes.’
He also welcomed last week’s decision by Merton Council to introduce its own scrappage scheme.
