Wadhurst Parish Council is undertaking legal proceedings to protect an ecological site from ‘inappropriate developments’.
The local authority took action against the Government following the Secretary of State’s decision to permit the permanent fixture of camping sites and yurt accommodation at Bewl Water, a man-made reservoir situated in the High Weald National Landscape.
Voicing concerns about noise and light pollution, as well as environmental threats posed by the campsite development, the local authority vowed to preserve the ‘natural beauty and integrity’ of Bewl Water and received more than £10,000 in donations from residents to subsidise the court case costs.
In a statement last week, the council said: ‘We believe that the Bewl Water decision undermines the new statutory protections designed to conserve and enhance these areas.’
Today during the High Court hearing, the council said it will ‘continue to advocate for the responsible and sustainable development’ of the countryside landscape, opposing the Government’s planning decisions.
